Childhood of the Brothers
- Wilbur was born on April 16, 1867
- Orville was born on Aug. 19, 1871
- Orville was a wild dreamer and full of ideas
- While Wilbur was more steady in his habits, more mature in his
judgments, and more likely to see a project through - The Wright brothers initially fashioned and sold toys; later they made tools,
including a lathe, a newspaper-folding device, and a printing press. - Since their father's job required the family to move often, the boys
attended public schools in Iowa, Indiana, and Dayton. - Surprisingly, Wilbur and Orville were the only Wright children not to attend college.
- In 1892 they opened the Wright Cycle Shop in Dayton
- This shop helped the brothers by fine tuning their mechanical
engineering practices, leading up to the invention of their plane - They studied the findings of Otto Lilienthal and his glider as background for their design
